CEO’s Gartner Survey (2023) looked forward into 2024. At the time of the survey, so many are still working or starting on “digital” (and the big strategy around AI where 56% said AI was the dominant tech of interest) let alone quantum. In fact ‘quantum’ was not even mentioned by CEO’s in the survey. Still 43% of CEO’s said they will tolerate longer time horizons for which quantum fits.
According to KPMG’s post-quantum migration survey, at the start of 2024, awareness is sorely lacking. A striking 32% of respondents expressed the view that the transition to Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) was irrelevant to their organization. While it's perplexing to comprehend the perspective of these individuals, they may soon find themselves taken aback by the evolving landscape. Notably, a significant number of participants, nearly everyone, shared concerns about the potential risk to their data during the migration process. Surprisingly, a mere 25% acknowledged the quantum threat in their risk management strategies. Additionally, 43% of respondents admitted unfamiliarity with the "store-now, decrypt-later" concept, and 29% were not well-versed in the NIST standardization process. These findings underscore the pervasive lack of awareness and appropriate prioritization of the quantum threat within the average organization. Not a great starting point for 2024’s business leaders. CEO’s must choose between urgent and important. Yet cryptographic risk represents both when considering how long it takes to adapt to a new computing system.
And cryptography is not the only quantum consideration. Competitive advantage is also high on the list. As is efficiency.
