Reactions for the social media post referencing the article titled “Researcher Claims to Crack RSA-2048 With Quantum Computer” was fast, explicit and from many perspectives. Some argued it was impossible in today’s quantum computing, NISQ era. Others demanded proof. Still other argued it was inevitable.

The impact of social media on quantum in 2023 runs deep. Scientists are enamoured with the possibilities of exchanging information via the smallest particles known to us. Business leaders anticipate the next big competitive advantage. Governments steel themselves in anticipation of Q-Day or Y2Q; the day or year when quantum computing breaks conventional security measures. Academic institutions laud the work of their constituent professors and students.

Given the ubiquitous nature of social media outlets like LinkedIn, Substack and Medium, word travels fast. Breakthroughs are reported daily connecting billions of people across the globe. Conference reports abound. People in the industry share frequently. Information sharing 2023 style. So what’s the impact on quantum in 2023?
